"goodstuff" as a concept just doesn't really work in cEDH. Even sticking to Temur, the Temur Omnath is a bit better since infinitely casting him will ping the table instead of requiring a wincon still in deck to cascade into. This isn't to say Maelstrom is completely unplayable, it's just a strictly worse version of First Sliver as there is really no compelling reason to run him over Sliver. Consult/Pact also layers perfectly with FC to try and exile your Squee and friends. Both lean on Breach as another route to victory, but Sliver also gets Oracle + Consult/Pact due to having B. The difference is Sliver will just be stronger due to having B for tutors and W for Silence effects. They are both looking to assemble FC + Squee/Misthollow/Scourge and infinitely cast their commander to cascade into a win. Sliver and Maelstrom, assuming built for cEDH, will play exactly the same. Big monsters are fun, but missing out on ] and ] is a travesty when playing stompy. Unfortunately and only due to the fact that it has access to black’s true tutors. And even I will concede the fact that First Sliver is outright better. It will definitely stomp out in high powered casual games, but you will see times where 3-5 6 mana cards will be stuck in your hand. I simple don’t see it as geared towards a cEDH meta. Downsides of course are it doesn’t stop oracle consult. And most of the time worse for your opponents than straight counterspells. But, it is one of the few free “counterspells” that I would deem worth it for 3 mana. ] may seem odd in that scenario, and yes it will fizzle. ] and ] refund your spell, while ] and ] can also destroy blue permanents. The counterspell package in here is also geared towards Maelstrom himself and while using him for value, it would be terrible to lose him it. Under the effects of a rule of law effect (which is common) you’ll find people scrambling to find their answer. ] leverages a soft lockdown and instant win if played on the right turn. Going through cards like ]->]->]->]->Unearth Fatestitcher -> kiki Jikiīut, Vannifar can make simpler plays like tutoring dockside by killing a bird.įood chain/squee is self explanatory, but food chain also leverages a lot of value and by experience has about a 80% win rate in combination with animar. ] has an infinite win line with maelstrom out and can get it from any creature on the battlefield. ] goes infinite with 3 cards flat out, but can have some other interesting interactions. Going infinite with ]/] or ]/deadeye allows for many different outs to win roughly 30 cards and you’re guaranteed to cast 2 cards with maelstrom. And cascading once can put a lot of value in your hands but, if it doesn’t threaten the win, your opponents can come back.Įssentially I use Maelstrom as a finisher rather than the focus. Your cards don’t have to cost a lot of mana to do great things. My current list and the one I’ll be running for Marchesa is deck leverages combo interactions between a multitude of cards and any card on the battlefield has the potential to explode into a combo win. The individual strengths of the cards and synergies between them do not put control or power into your hands besides a generic beatdown plan. One big issue I see with your deck is that you focus far too much on Maelstrom Wanderer himself. I have been a ] player since his Planechase release and have seen an incredible amount of iterations of my deck. So, I actually have quite a bit to add in here.
